There are several good alternatives in this case.

You may find that some of your existing items can be refurbished to accomodate a new life.

Example: you got your children a wooden toybox with a hinged lid when they were toddlers, and now it's stuffed in your attic because your children are grown. Get it out, strip it, and stain it and use it at the foot of your bed for blanket/sheet storage. or… use it as a coffee table in your living room.

Other good pieces to use for storgage would be a liars bench or telephone bench.

For bedroom storage, I highly recommend getting bed risers. We use double risers on our bed which has raised our bed 8 inches off the floor for awesome storage space underneath which we have pull out tubs (like those you would put wrapping paper in -- they are flatter and clear so you can see through them).

I can relate to this problem. I have a smaller closet, so I have included some of my favorite options for storage. They make adjustable shelves for storage, and racks. I like to use the storage boxes for my winter sweaters in the summer, and store on my top shelf. The hanging storage are a favorite for my kids rooms, they can put shoes and accessories in them also.

There are many different ways to organize your closet that will allow you more space to store stuff. If you are wanting a whole new system for you closet the John Louis shelving system would work great. It give you more shelves and drawers to put things in. They also have the Jewelry organizer that you can put your jewelry in to keep it safe and secure and not laying out everywhere. Then there is the over the door shoe organizer. It allows you to keep all the unwanted shoes off the floor.
