I am in graduate school and let me tell you the best choice I ever made was going with the MSI Wind. They are affordable (under $400) and the battery life is great. Mine lasts around 3.5 to 4 hours when charged depending on what I am doing and if I have one program or a ton going at once. Also the MSI Wind has a huge vent area so you do not need a seperate cooling fan which is great.
You should also look at the Aspire One. It is around the same price as the MSI Wind but the battery life varies. Some ads say 2 hours and some say up to 6. It just depends.
There is also the Asus which as received great reviews.
All of these models have built in webcam as well which is a great touch.
