Personally, I just use the solution that is made for my carpet cleaner. After some research, though, I think I might try the Simple Green Carpet Cleaner next time. I've had excellent results using Simple Green for other situations, so I think it would perform well on carpets too. You can purchase a gallon of Simple Green Carpet Cleaner for $20.25 at Office Depot. The best part is Simple Green is non-toxic, so no sickening fumes!
