There are a lot of different kinds of jewelry boxes, but for me I like to have the following properties in any jewelry box that I buy:
it has to have something to hang the chains on - otherwise they will get tangled up in my box - some jewelry boxes have sides that open up with hooks for hanging the chains, others have snap tabs on the inside of the lid and the chains are held in the bottom in a little pocket - either way, I gotta have those little hooks!
it has to have a separate compartment for pearls that is lined with a soft material - i like satin because i'm a romantic and the satin reflects the luster of the pearls. they just look beautiful in there. :) but mainly, you need a separate compartment where earring backs or sticky things won't scratch your pearls
there has to be a compartment for earrings where i can easily slide my earrings into place without having to remove and replace the backings, and where they can be stabilized so that they don't scratch each other
i like the ring compartment as well where i can set my rings in between the raised felt so that they are pointing up in a nice little row :). this way, they don't scratch each other as well.
some jewelry boxes have a place for sterling silver to retard tarnishing. you can keep sterling silver from tarnishing by keeping it in an airtight container and placing some anti-tarnish tissue paper in with it. you can also store them in zip closure plastic bags to keep your sterling silver nice and shiny.
one more thing to consider is the safety of small children in your home. if you have kids that put little things in their mouths, you may want to consider a locking one.
bottom line for me is when looking for something to store my nice jewelry in (i'm a jewelry designer) i don't want to buy a box with a bunch of drawers or, heaven forbid, just a box with no separators at all like a trinket box, no matter how much character it has. i want something that will separate, protect, and pamper my jewelry. :)
here are a couple that show some of the things i was talking about (i also like the middle one recommended by the other answer)
well - i can't find the one i want to add so here's the website of two more favorites! one is expensive but has two removeable travel cases. basically, this is my dream jewelry box!http://gifts.redenvelope.com
and thttp://www.jewelryboxdirect.com one is really nice too for $79 with free ground shipping - it's a travel style case but I really like it:
best wishes!

Depending on what you what to spend here are some nice options for you. If you want a nice looking jewelry box, the Mele Rowena Burlwood Cherry Jewelry Box would be a great one. iT has 8 compartments and is only $50.00
My favorite was the Vionne Black Travel Jewelry case, not just for travelling. It is a large size jewelry box with faux leather and a locking lid, very nice box.
A third less expensive option, modern design is the Muji Jewelry box, it has a clear acrylic case with a mirror and felt trays. Personally, I would love any of them.
