My mom has struggled with thinning hair and breakage from chronic illness as well. She uses a great shampoo that really works. It is not a miracle product, you have to use it for a prolonged time, but if you stick with it show great results, it is called Nioxin. They have several different branches of their product to allow you to customize what works best with your hair type and condition.
