I would agree to look into Apple, but you will also need to buy some programs to make music.

For the consumer level, you can use GarageBand (included in iLife)

On the pro level, consider logicpro and SoundtrackPro  (now bundled with Logic) or Logic Express 9.

Also, if you are planning to hook up instruments, you may need to see
what kind of connection they need. For digital audio, you may need a power mac with digital audio ports. For a MIDI instrument, you will need  a USB MIDI cable. For just audio in/out, you will need the proper audio cable.

For sheet music notation Finale (and lower cost versions with less features) is available for PC or MAC OS X.
