what kind of video card do I need for Sims 3?

Being an avid sims fan, thats a great question. Having the right video card makes all the difference.

If you have a PC, you need a 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0. I would recommend the NVIDIA GeForce 9800

If you have a Mac, then you need an ATI X1600 or Nvidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100. The Sims 3 is definitely worth the upgrade, but in addition to your video card, below is the  other specs are also a requirement for the game (this is for a PC, if you have a Mac, click this Sims3 link) :

• 2.4 GHz P4 processor or equivalent
• 1.5 GB RAM
• 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
• Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1
• At least 6.1 GB of hard drive space
