If you're new to tap dancing, it's best to buy your first pair of tap shoes in person.
Be sure to wear the same type of socks or stockings that you wear whenyou are dancing, and bring along any special inserts or innersoles youuse as well. Look for a comfortable and snug -- but not too tight --fit.
If your routine includes "toe stands," ask for sturdy, reinforced toe boxes to support your feet.
When you've narrowed your search to a few pairs, don't just walk around in them; try a dance step or two as well. Be sure to check out Dance4less and Allaboutdance

If you are shopping for your first pair of tap dance shoes, it's really best to go to a studio near your home to be properly fitted. Be sure to bring along the same type of socks or stockings that you'll be wearing while dancing, as well as any insoles or arch supports you use as well. That said, if you already know the sizing you need well, then one of the best sources online is Capezio - http://www.capeziodance.com where they carry everything from oxfords and clogs to high button boots. Alternately, you can find a pair of shoes you love at your favourite shoe store, and attack your own taps, so long as the soles are strong and thick enough to support it. Taps are attached with small screws, though it's best done by a professional at your local shoe repair shop. Taps are available anywhere, but I'd recommend teletone taps, which you can find right on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P4XZEO/ref%3Dasc_df_B000P4XZEO819448/%3Ftag%3Daskcomel-20%26creative%3D380333%26creativeASIN%3DB000P4XZEO%26linkCode%3Dasn
