So...I am going to put a set of ski poles in my 8 year old's hands this winter. We are hoping that no one near him gets hurt...any suggestions on kids ski poles?

WOW!
That is pretty impressive! Your son is very talented! I have a 7 year old daughter who's so uncoordinated I'm surprised she can walk without falling, let alone ski! : )
You can often purchase poles dependent upon height. If he's 8 then he'd probably fall into the 38-40 inch/100 centimeters pole length range. That is just something to look for if the retailer you chose offers a sizing choice.
Here are some of the best rated Children's Ski Poles, and some that I think look like a good option for his safety and that of others on the hills:
Skis made by the Scott Brand offer an affordable yet individual choice. They offer MANY types and sizes of ski poles for children. From general poles to those of a specialty, Scott offers a nice choice. See many of them at http://www.Skis.com or the Scott website.
Also on http://www.Ski.com are the Atomic SX Ski Poles-Juniors. These are soft grip with double density thermo rubber. Made of Aluminum, 18mm. Only $14.95.
Alpina and Swix are two top ski pole producers. Compare their Juniors selections to see which fits your son the best in size, style and type of skier.
Then see the Excel S5 Junior Tour Ski Pole at Gear West Ski and Run. There are for classic skiers who need performance-quality poles. If your son fits this description, I'd recommend checking them out. They are only $24.99.
Also offered are lighter aluminum poles that better suite those who can not handle the heavier fiber glass poles. These are the Swix CT6 Alustar Jr Ski Pole and are only $31.99.

I hope this helps you and your son find the perfect set of ski poles for those winter hills!
Thanks!
Have a Great Day : )
