There is a great article on http://www.about.com (http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/equipment/a/Athletic_Socks.htm) about what makes a great athletic sock. In a nutshell socks made of hydrophobic fibers are ideal while wool and cotton are not ideal due to moisture retaining qualities. These socks do tend to cost more than their plain cotton or wool counter parts but they are worth it!

The two most important qualities for any athletic sock are fit and moisture-wicking. A good fit keeps socks from sliding and reduces friction which can cause blisters. Moisture wicking moves sweat away from your feet to the surface of the sock, keeping you dry.
The best kind are Fox River Brand. You can get them at http://www.foxsox.com and other athletic stores. They have fibers that wick the moisture from your feet, ventilate, and they are flexible which reduces friction.
