You'll want to look for several major things in the dog shampoo you buy---does it really clean and does it condition. Also, if your dog has special skin needs there are several veterinary formulas for specific needs. (check the puppy link below and you'll see additional products on that page) If you use any kind of spot flea and tick application you'll need to make sure it is soap free (or else you'll be stripping away their protection!) Just as there are thousands of hair salons, using a myriad of different hair shampoos there vets and spas that use many different dog shampoos.
If your vet has a recommendation try that first. Make sure you do like the smell since you'll be the one using it on your dog. Dogs can tend to get itchy and irritated skin because their fur traps in the moisture and any shampoo residue from a bath. Make sure you fully rinse your dog and towel them dry (before they decide to help you by shaking it off!) I might be trial and error to find the best shampoo for your dog but I've listed a few good options for you to start with below.
