Hi and thanks for your question!
The type of laptop that you want to buy should really depend on what you want to do with it. Are you a casual, gamer, student or business oriented? When it comes to buying in stores Bestbuy has the most diverse collection of laptops to consider. It's hard to say exactly what laptop will be available at your local Bestbuy but I'll share some of the most common that should be in store. Also other stores you'll want to consider are Wal-mart Office Max/Depot and Staples.
With back to school sales going on you'll find a number of sales that you'll want to take advantage on as soon as possible. And if you live in Florida I heard this morning that they have tax free weekend this weekend so if your state participates in this go buy now! All the laptops I'll be recommending will have Intel processors. The reason is that Intel is better than AMD. Also some will have the new i3, i5 or i7 processors. This will allow you to be up to date digitally versus using the any laptop with the Intel Core 2 Duo. They are so last year! =) But because these are not completely phased out yet some laptops will pull from the older series.
If you're a student or casual user then you really don't want to spend more than $500-600 and that is on the high end in my opinion. If you're a gamer/business person then let me know and I'll adjust my answer to fit your needs because these types of laptops require more money, and specs.
Honestly, I like an online special that Wal-mart has going on with a back to school bundle where you can get a laptop case, laptop, USB drive and printer for $348. Final price will adjust based off what you select. The color options are pretty sweet. Regardless of the other laptops by default I am a fan of Compaq laptops because I've had two that I've used through my college years. As a brand of HP you get good customer service and support. Dell is also an exceptional company that you may want to consider and with the new i3 processor you're sure to be happy with your laptop over the next few years (provided that updates and PC cleaning is maintained). Of all these I recommend the Dell but Compaq will be the way to go if you don't want to pay that much.
I hope this helps!

I really recommend the Dell Inspiron 1545. You can get these in store at either WalMart or Best Buy. I bought one of these myself a few months ago and I really love it! It has been a great laptop!
