A friend of mine has the Macbook Air, and they use a Java PS3 media server. It's really easy.. You just have to start it (on your iMac.. connected to the router or modem) and keep the PS3 connected to your router.. The thing will automatically detect your PS3 and will pop up on the PS3 XMB (home screen). Then just go to the Ps3 media server icon on Ps3 / Users (Your Mac name) Downloads (or any other place you have the media file)... Note: You can access Music from the Music section Server and Videos from the Videos section Server just like in normal use...
This works like a charm as it plays nearly all the video formats (even the ones not compatible with PS3... it converts them while transmitting it... and that too without any lag). Go to below link to download it. It's absolutely Free and very reliable.
