Buying a sim card can differ depending on who your carrier is. The answers I will give will talk about the most basic USA  based SIM cards. You can also buy different SIM cards ifyou are going to be travelling internationally. Most SIM cards tend to work best on AT&T based carriers.

You can go with the Unites States SIM Card (SIMple calling)  which is a cheaper buy up front, but read the terms of it carefully so you dont rack up an unwanted bill.
A USA T-Max card may be a cheaper card in the long run if you plan on using the cards often. It starts with 1100 mins and they also have fewer requirements and texting is cheaper too. This is also a USA based card.
If you are looking for International or Global coverage then Mobal GSM World SIM Card may fit your needs better. The rates are about $0.05 per minute cheaper than AT&T, but ultimately it will depend on which countries you visit.

Sim cards can be purchased from your cell phone service provider for a very small fee.  Somewhere around $10-20 depending on your provider.  Don't fall for the gimmicks on E-bay or some of the other sites that offer unlimited SIM card offers.  The catch is they are only good for a certain period of time and you have to continually change your phone number everytime you purchase a new card.  It's better to just go through your service provider and have them send you a new SIM card.
