As with anything, do your research. There are great sites out there that research and help others who want to work from home to do it. I have been working from home for nearly 19 years and I had my hits and misses for sure.
There are great sites with other fellow work at home pros who can lend you the support you need. Check out the following sites that I have used and found great legitimate leads on.
WAHM
Work At Home Mafia
TRochelle's Blog
Work at Home Mom Revolution
Work At Home Space
Don't discount Craigslist as a resource too. Just be careful. A great checklist I came up with works great for these postings.
What we need to do as work at home professionals is employ a few very simple strategies which I am going to call “CRAIGSLIST TEST” to help us weed through Craigslist and transform it back into a viable option for opportunties. Contact email is a hotmail account but the company is Something Job, LLC for example Research - Use the scam section on the Mafia to see if that company has been discussed. Avoid - do not apply to any job where they ask you to remail, reship or cash money orders or checks. You will end up in prison from that. Identity - when you are asked before you are hired to provide proof of identity such as your driver’s license. Grand claims - Another common sense issue since these are just outlandish claims such as “Make $500 to $3,500 Per Month From Home! Without leaving your home or risking one penny of your hard-earned money! Without Owning a Website! Without Selling Anything! Social Security number required to apply. Lack of interest in meeting or speaking to applicants. Illegal Activities - If you see a job posting that asks you to receive and ship packages, you can assume that by accepting this position, you’ll be trafficking stolen merchandise or worse. Scam denial - if you have to say you are a legitimate opportunity more then a job description then you are probably covering up something. Typos - no professional real company is going to post ads that have not been spell checked. I’m not saying mistakes don’t slip through but be wary.

The best thing that I have found that works is if you have the time and the money start your own business. My wife is a work at home mom and her business make for a really nice suppliment to our income. IF youthink that might be something you would be interested in do a google search and hopefully you can find some good resources, I asked my wife and she said that http://www.successfuldreaming.info was pretty helpful. Good luck!
I work for ChaCha and I love it because there is always something to do, even at any hour of the day because you are answering questions people text or call in. It does tend to be busier on the weekends too. You can check it out here

It has been said in other posts but the one site that I recommend to everyone new to the WAH (work at home) world is http://www.WAHM.com. The community is full of helpful supportive people and lots of great jobs leads (all completely free!). Without them I would never have found my first WAH job over 4 years ago now.
One more tip I have that cannot ever be said enouph, never ever ever (with a very few exceptions) pay for a job, an application, a "start up" fee, or any other fees. This is the hallmark of a scam. A very few good legit WAH jobs (liveops for example) charge for a background check. This is the only time you should ever pay a fee.
Best of luck!

Sometime in the near future IMshopping will be inviting community members to be paid shopping assistant guides. ChaCha is another company that offers work from home jobs that consist of you answering or categorizing questions. And If you can type pretty fast and accurate you can transcribe voicemails into text for a company called QuickTate.
