Long term?
Long term in the electronics market is a year.
New capabilities and improvements hit the US market about every 12 to 16 months, so electronics purchases can not be thought of as our parents and grand parents did. That you buy one really good TV and it lasts until you retire.
Anyway, here is the information you REALLY need to know about Samsung vs. Sony televisions long term.
The question you want to ask yourself is, "Am I going to cross between multiple electronics devices?"
What I mean by that is, will you buy/use a Sony digital camera or use a Sony (Vaio) computer or other Sony electronics products that you might enjoy having "work" together?
Sony is notorious for creating their own proprietary data formats, systems and hardware that will not work (or will not work easily) with competitor's products.
If you want to build or have a seamless compatibility between all of your electronic products, go with Sony.
If all you are concerned about is picture quality and cost, Samsung might be the answer for you.
The best suggestion is to go to your local big-box store and look at the largest display of TV's you can find. That is the only way you will appreciate the subtle differences in picture quality from unit to unit, side-by-side. You can decide which picture "looks" best to you.
THEN go on-line and shop places like http://www.dell.com and http://www.circuitcity.com for your best deal. (You thought Circuit City was gone, didn't you? Surprise and they often have JAW DROPPING prices on tons of electronics and accessories!)
If you're looking for "deals", though. Panasonic is really hammering the US market right now with some really great deals on TV's.
Personally, I don't get the craze many people have for having the highest definition TV they can buy. Is TV really better when you can see the mole on the host's face?

You will pay more for the Sony and probably won't notice any difference in the picture quality between the Sony and the Samsung. They are both GREAT HDTVs. Buy which ever one you like the best you will be very happy with either.

Samsung seems to get high praise for being just as good as Sony but with a lower price.
