Yes, in the long run it certainly is. But then again, why pay more when you could pay the same as a no-brand appliance?  I was looking everywhere for these brands of a fridge for my new apartment, because I've heard horror stories of the cheaper brand fridges.  Sears had some great deals, but I ended up buying my fridge online from this really reliable store.. definitely worth checking out.  Their prices are not bad at all too!   Best of luck to you!  Also, I've attached the best fridges out of all three brands (I've done my research haha).  I'd highly, highly suggest the Whirpool Gold side by side fridge.  =)

I had a top of the line Maytag Refridgerator - purchased new in 1986. It never needed servicing.
It lived it's life out and died. In in 2002 I bought a top of the line Kitchen Aid Refrigerator, beting
told it was superior to Maytag. 1/2010 it cost me $300 to repair, as water from the freezer was
coming into the refrigerator part, and freezing and making a horrible mess.

Now, 8/2012 about 2.5 years later, the same problem has recurred, and I'll have to have it
serviced tomorrow. I assume the repair price will be higher, because of inflation.

So when it comes time to buy another refridgerator, it will NOT be a Kitchen Aid.

As far as reviews I see a lot less complaints and happy clients with the Kitchenaid fridge. You might want to go to View points and check out specific ones that your contemplating on purchasing. I don't think its fair to listen to old complaints from years ago because refrigerators have really advanced as far as energy efficiency, styles & sizes. ; )
