When buying a futon mattress, you should look for a mattress that is a good 6 inches thick. The thicker mattresses last longer than the less thick ones. The mattresses that about 3 inches thick are good for a roll away or one that is going to be stored and not used as much. There has also been a rise in popularity for the leather covers that are used over the futon mattress.
