Lost is highly recommended!
Well, if you're a woman, I would highly recommend Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy if you haven't seen those. I was really surprised by how good of a show they really are.

If you want a mystery that will pull you in completely, go with Lost.
Crime fighting with humor and camraderie, go with Bones.
Dry humor with interesting medical drama, House.
Comedy with characters that will draw you in, How I Met Your Mother.
Everyone has different likes and dislikes when it comes to televsion shows. Consider a DVD television series from one of the winners of the 2009 Emmy Awards; these shows were comended as the best in their category. For comedy, the winner was 30 Rock. For drama series, the winner was Mad Men. Best nonfiction television show was American Masters on PBS.
My favorites include Desperate Housewives, Modern Family and Sons of Anarchy. The best advice is to try a few and see which shows you find yourself wanting to see more of.

I am hoping you are not looking for G Rated or family friendly. All my favorites are niether. I highly recommend the Tudors. It just ended on Showtime and was absolutely fantastic! It gives you a deeper meaning of the hisotry of Henry the VIII and was very welll done. There is a lot of adult content though.
Sex and the City, fantastic! You will not be able to stop watching. You'll crack up on every episode.
I never saw the Sopranos but people love it.
