I need help picking a new car. I love the Honda Element, my husband wants something more truck-like, he's looking at the Nissan X-terra. For a middle line between us we've settled on Subarus. Forester, Outback, or Impreza, they're all pretty nice. And a friend showed us the Nissan Leaf, its a cute little thing but most of the info I can get on it is all hype about how awesome it is, nothing really concrete. We're all over the place and are open to anything I think, so long as it fits what we need. We are very active people and tend to be hard on our cars. We need something with a cargo area for our dog so any passengers wouldn't have 100lbs extra on their laps, plus we've got tons of gear for various things. Camping, fishing, kayaking, building materials, furniture, etc. We pack the car full with something or other almost every weekend so it has to have room and the ability to handle getting beat up. Something with ground clearance would be nice so we don't wind up stuck in any more ditches...but as small as possible since we live in the middle of a city, parking's at a premium. We don't want a gas guzzler and honestly I hate most SUVs although its looking like that's we need. I would love a hybrid or electric even but they cost, and of course we need the price as low as possible as well 20 to 25k. You see my problem? We need the perfect car and I'm convinced it doesn't exist.

Well if you are thinking of wanting an electric car and one in your 20-25,000 range the Nissan Leaf may just be the ticket.  Actually sold for 32,000 but with discounts they are saying it can be picked up around 25,000.
The problem with finding reviews on it is right now it is not being sold.  It will be out this year a little later.  You can reserve one for 99.00.  Here is some of the details on the vehicle:
  • Nissan LEAF is powered by laminated compact lithium-ion batteries, which generate power output of over 90kW, while its electric motor delivers 80kW/280Nm.
  • Nissan LEAF can be charged up to 80 percent of its full capacity in just under 30 minutes with a quick charger. Charging at home through a 200V outlet is estimated to take approximately eight hours.
  • Nissan LEAF's frontal styling is characterized by a sharp, upright V-shaped design featuring long, up-slanting light-emitting diode (LED) headlights that employ a blue internal reflective design. The headlights are designed to cleverly split and redirect airflow away from the door mirrors, thus reducing wind noise and drag. And, the headlights consume just 10 percent of the electricity of conventional lamps.
  • Nissan LEAF employs an exclusive advanced IT system. Connected to a global data center, the system can provide support, information, and entertainment for drivers 24 hours a day. The dash-mounted monitor displays Nissan LEAF's remaining power - or "reachable area" - in addition to showing a selection of nearby charging stations. Another state-of-the-art feature is the ability to use mobile phones to turn on air-conditioning and set charging functions - even when Nissan LEAF is powered down. An on-board remote-controlled timer can also be pre-programmed to recharge batteries.
One last thing you might want to know is you can drive for 100 miles before reviving your battery.  Where I live this would not work as I live in the boonies so we travel that easily to just visit a bigger city.  If you live in a big city it might be very convenient.

For a reqular vehicle that is in your price range but rated very high I would look the Chevrolet Equinox.  This vehicle was rated at the fop for great price and fuel economy.  Now this vehicle is a small suv so will be very compact.   Which would work great in your limited space.

One last vehicle I would take a long hard look at is the Honda CR-V.  This vehicle is rated rather high too and offers one of the best for safety, utility and affordablilty.  Many reviews say it is the best out there.

Good luck picking your new vehclie and ENJOY!
