Carat is the weight of a single diamond. Carat weight is used as a measure for other gemstones, but different gems of the same weight aren't necessarily the same size, because some gemstones are more dense than others--meaning that they pack more weight into a smaller space. Since diamonds are a girls best friend, there is no such thing as "too big." The value of the diamond is based upon the cut, color and clarity. Try to avoid 1/4 carat and smaller. If you can't afford a larger diamond you could always tell the one you love that in a few years you can trade it in for something nicer. Congratulations on your engagement!

Hi there. I can help you with your engagement ring shopping.  Carat or KT is the size of the diamond.  Since you are getting an engagement ring, I would start with something small and save the big diamond for your 5th or 10th anniversary.  Love is about hearts not diamonds.  Please take a look at some rings I have found.  T.W. is total weight of the ring.  I will also include some beautiful gemstone rings and cubic zirconia rings.

Yes, the Carat or K is the size of the diamond. A .50 or half carat is a nice size, remember you can always upgrade. My husband gave me a .10 which is considered a chip and we have upgraded over the years. Remember it is the feeling behind it not necessarily the size but I understand that you want to take her breath away too. T.W. refers to total weight. Usually T.W. you see when the diamonds are broken up. Like in earrings or a ring that has 1 center diamond and maybe 2 little ones on each side.
Your cut is also important. The most popular is the brilliant or round but it is sort of old school. What is in right now is cushion or princess cuts. Stay away from marquise cut. They tend to be sharp on the ends and kind of out of style.
The Clarity is also another feature of a diamond. It refers to the flaws in it. However, most flaws are unseen by the naked eye anyway and not something you should worry about.
The Color is the last of the 4 C's of a diamond. Clear is the most popular but diamonds do in come in colors. There is Yellow which is not a desired color and then there are rare colors like Pink or Black which are highly expensive.
So let me list some diamonds for you that should be good choices and give you the professional run down of the 4 C's:
The 4 Cs:
  1. Cut
The cut actually pertains to both the shape of the diamond and to the make (how well a diamond was fashioned to good proportions and polish). Shapes include round, marquise, princess, radiant, pear, oval, emerald, and heart, and a few rare shapes. The Make includes details such as table percentage, depth percentage, polish, and symmetry, among others.
Learn more about cut, shape and make.
  2. Color
The color of diamonds varies from colorless (highest quality) to many shades of yellow (less rare). Some people ignore the "popular" trend toward the colorless and prefer the warmth of light yellow tints.
    Learn more about color.
  3. Clarity
Diamonds are a natural substance, and no two diamonds are exactly alike. Nature signs each of its creations with telltale inclusions, or internal flaws. A diamond with more inclusions will be less rare, so it will be less expensive. But this does not necessarily mean it will be less beautiful to the naked eye.
    Learn more about clarity.
  4. Carat Weight
The weight of diamonds is measured in carats. Larger diamonds are much more rare, so a 2-carat gem will be worth significantly more than 2 diamonds of the same quality weighing 1 carat each.
