If all you are looking to do is use the laptop as a word processor you could just purchase a netbook.
There are plenty of inexpensive laptops too. Compaq computers are just the home user's version of Hewlett Packard laptops and can cost around $500 and most retailers will have some kind of sale too.

Most computers will come with a basic word processing like word pad. Not all computer some with it preinstalled but it can be download for free from Microsoft. When purchasing a new computer it will not come with MIcrosfot Offfice (it is just a trial version). You can purchase Microsoft Office Home And Student for $109 (sometimes you can find it for less). You can install this version of Office on 3 computers.

You can also download for free Open Office which is fully compatible with Micrsoft Office files.

Hi, and thank you for choosing IMShopping!
Most laptops that I know of that have a Windows operating system have Word Pad, which is a word processing program.
At the Hewlett -Packard site (http://www.hp.com), starting from $429.99 plus shipping (basic configuration) is the Compaq Presario CQ61Z notebook. It comes with Windows Home Premium, built in Wi-Fi and microphone, and a CD/DVD drive. To see this computer, go to this link: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Everyday+computing&series_name=CQ61Z_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/Everyday_computing/CQ61Z_series.
At http://www.dell.com is the Inspiron 15 that starts at $499 plus shipping. It comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, 1 year basic service plan, and a 320 GB hard drive. You have the option to customize, but it will cost extra. Check out the Inspiron here: http://www.configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dndozm2&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19.
For $498 on http://www.walmart.com is an Acer Aspire notebook. It comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, an integrated webcam, as well as a 320 GB hard drive. To see more specs, see this link: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-17.3-320-GB-AS7736Z-4088/13352322.
I hope this helps you. You can always contact HP, Dell, or Walmart as well if you want to be extra certain there is something like Word Pad on the notebook you are thinking about. If you have more questions, ask IMShopping!
