I I say, use a silver shampoo it looks blue or purple in the bottle but actually the blue is what tones down the yellow in your hair...

The reason for you hair turning yellow when using a flat iron, can be because the heat activates chemicals from out environment. Also if you around smokers etc.
I hope this helped!

From researching online, there could be one of tow problems of why there is a yellowing of the hair. One:  the hair might have product buildup and when the flat iron makes contact with the residue, it is causing it to turn brown or Two: the iron’s temperature is too high, causing the hair to be scorched. I have found a great product at Sallys Beauty Supply called Shiny Silver. The product specs are:
  • Eliminates yellow from grey and white hair
  • Neutralizes and tones down brassiness
  • Imparts new brilliance and brightness to hair
  • Soothes conditions and enriches hair
  • Improves manageability, body and softness
  • Conditions and restores moisture to dry, damaged hair

One 'n Only Shiny Silver Ultra Conditioning Shampoo restores shiny brightness to white and gray hair. Enhances blonde and revitalizes bleached, frosted and blonde-tinted hair. Formulated with lavender, lemon, orange peel, grapefruit and tangerine to soothe, condition and enrich hair. One 'N Only has been a leader in the hair care industry for over 40 years.
This product also has a 5 star rating and has hair spray and conditioner. Also if you sign up for their discount card for $5, you pay what the professionals pay. What a deal!

Happy Shopping!

Hello, I've received your follow-up question. Interesting...the yellow comes and doesn't become a permanent part of your hair color? I took a little longer than usual to get back to you because I wanted to call a hairdresser friend of mine and pose your question to her. She said that just one of the reasons your hair could be turning yellow is from using the flat iron without a protectant. However, there are other reasons too, she said.
    • you might be using a hair product in conjunction with the flat iron that is causing it to turn yellow. She said some hair products, when exposed to heat, turn yellow and with your silver/white hair, it's turning your hair yellow.
    • your flat iron might need a good cleaning. She suggested dampening a paper towel or cloth with rubbing alcohol and giving the iron a good scrubbing, to make sure you didn't have any product residue on it. Since the yellow is washing out of your hair, she suspects that your flat iron needs cleaning.
    • your hair might be heat sensitive. She said definitely use the products I listed, but try turning the flat iron heat down. If you hair's fine, the heat could be breaking down its structure, just leaving the yellow behind.
    • if none of these work, she suggests not using the flat iron, but to find another method of straightening your hair, because you could damage your hair with it.

Debbie"

A flat iron can make your hair look great when it's used properly, but if it's not, it will get damaged. I know that after I use mine more than a few times a week, my ends are damaged beyond repair.

The secret to succesfully using a flat iron is in the heat protectant products you use on it before you put the heat to your hair. That's because the heat in a flat iron is so concentrated, it can burn your hair -- and I suspect your hair's yellow tinge isn't a color change, but a sign that the flat iron is damaging it. If you use a heat protecting spray, it coats the hair shaft and allows the heat from the flat iron to do your hair, not kill it.

Of the three protectants below, I like the Dove spray the best. I always have good luck with Dove products and this makes my coarse hair feel smooth and soft.

Now if I could just quit burning my forehead when I'm straightening my hair!
