An ideal surround sound system will have 6-7 speakers. It should include 4 directional speakers, 1 or 2 central speakers and 1 subwolfer. "The Center speaker is placed at 12o’clock . The front right speaker is placed at 11 o’clock on the front wall. The front left speaker is placed at 1 o’clock on the front wall. Your surround right speaker is then placed at 4 o’clock on the side wall right to the listener. Your surround left speaker is placed at 8 o’clock on the side wall left of the listener."

If you have a 6.1 or 7.1 system then you should add 2 more speakers as back surround speakers.

There are a lot of systems out there to choose from, so think about how much surround you want, ie where will people be sitting and how large you rooms is. This will help you determine how many speakers you want. You can pay reasonable prices or 1000's depending on what you want and your budget.

If you have a 5.1 that is 5 spks and 1 subwoofer. If you have a 7.1 7 spks and 1 subwoofer.

In my opinion there should be no more than 5-6 speakers, to receive the best surround sound experience.
