Here is a little info that may help prevent you from buying a coach bag that is not Authentic.

FAKE SERIAL NUMBERS AND COUNTERFEIT COACH BAGS

To help wade through the counterfeit Coaches for sale, here's a basic guide to some of the most commonly-used fake serial numbers. Most of these show up on older classic leather bags but have been found on new Signature bags and leather bags too. And more will show up every month, so don't think that if a number isn't listed here it must be ok.

Obviously there's more to deciding whether or not a Coach bag or other accessory is counterfeit than just the serial number. You also have to look at the construction details like zipper pulls, hardware, stitching, the design and thickness of the straps, the design and font used on the creed stamp or creed patch, and especially whether the style number (the numbers to the right of the dash) on the creed actually belongs to that style bag. (Before 1994, most serial numbers were seven numbers long and didn't give any clue to the style name of the bag. After 1994 the last half of the number was actually the style number, and the front half of the number showed where and when the item was made.)

Read the creed carefully and look for mistakes in spacing, spelling and punctuation (these don't always prove something is fake but they will nine times out of ten).

Beware of "classic" leather bags with sewn-on cell phone holders on the side, another sign of a probable counterfeit.

Beware of any bag whose construction doesn't match the deion on the creed patch. For instance, if a creed says that a bag is made of genuine leather and doesn't mention any other type of material but the bag is mostly fabric with leather trim, you're looking at a fake.

And beware of any older bag where the name Coach is stamped on the outside or the flap, especially if it isn't in the lower center of the flap. There are exceptions, but ask someone at the Purses Board to look at the auction to see if your bag is one of them.

The following numbers will always indicate a counterfeit Coach bag, especially any serial number starting with NT- or TN- :

NT-4903 NT-4908 NT-4115 NT-4157

TN-9085 TN-9096 TN-9951 TN-4186

7H-7456 4C-9911 40-8624

In fact, ANY Coach bag with only two letters or one number and one letter to the left of the hyphen can be assumed to be fake, whether or not the number is in the above list.

I did some research for you and found this on ehow.com Coach handbags are an excellent example of American craftsmanship at its best. Made with quality materials and an attention to detail that's rare in today's marketplace, Coach handbags are worth their high price. As always, there are people who would rather spend less and purchase a fake bag. The fake bags may look similar to the real thing, but they are not identical. To tell the difference between the fake and the real, all you have to do is read the signs.

· Step 1 Look closely at the Coach "C" logos on the outside of the bag. They should all be symmetrical, especially at the seams. Notice whether any of the "C" logos are cut off at any of the bag's edges or seams. An authentic Coach bag does not display a logo that has been severed or partially sewn into a seam. No matter how slight the compromise may be, the "C" should be completely in tact. · Step2 Verify that all of the stitching is a uniform double-thickness. Any thin, single-thread or inconsistent stitching indicates a fake Coach handbag. · Step3 Check the lining on signature Coach bags. Signature bags do not have signature linings. Signature linings are used by Coach, but only in bags with solid-colored exteriors. · Step4 Check the bag for a lining. Leaving the lining out of a bag is an easy way to cut costs when manufacturing a fake bag. All authentic Coach handbags are lined, with only one exception. The Coach Classic is sold without a lining. · Step5 Look beyond the serial number or authentication code. Many designers use such codes and Coach is no exception. The difference is that Coach is very inconsistent with the use and application of these numbers. It is not uncommon to find Coach bags from different lines with the exact same number. Because of this, these codes are not a reliable means for determining authenticity.
