Hello! I am someone who uses my Ipod on a daily basis. I have had a shuffle, a nano, a classic and now have a 16Gig ITouch.
I have wasted a TON of money on cheap transmitters or one's that promise a lot and deliver very litte. The ones that I would avoid would be, those made by Belkin, the majority of the no name docking/transmitter combinations (usually found on ebay)
Currently I have found that the Monster iCar Play FM Transmitter/charger is one of the best out there. It is digital and is the sound is digital quality. These can be found on http://www.Amazon.com and http://www.Target.com. This is my personal favorite and you can be sure the quality is the best.
The second leading name in iPod transmitters would be Griffin. They are right up there with Monster, if not a little better and a litle more pricey. I have selected one for you to check out. This one can be found on http://www.Amazon.com and http://www.Target.com as well. I do not have any personal experience with this one, however this is the one my husband uses and has had it for 2 year with no problems.
I would recommend staying away from the cassette tape transmitters, as those do not have good quality. If the wire becomes loose in any way you will have static getting in the way of your music.
The docking stations and transmitter combinations are great to a point, however they get burnt out extremely easily... especially if you plan on using your iPod daily in your car like I do mine.
I hope you have found my answer to be helpful and good luck on choosing your FM Transmitter!!

Have you looked at http://www.Overstock.com yet? I purchased my FM transmitter for $25 and it works well in an older car that we thought would not be able to use a transmitter. The model I purchased also fits the different size models and doubles as a charger.
Here is the link to the one I purchased:

or also the all channel FM Transmitter w/ Car charger for iPod/iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS on sale from $83.73 for $18.99.

If you have a cassette deck in the car, you can use a cassette adaptor and get way better sound. They start at 47 cents on Amazon.

I had this same problem in my car until I went to Walmart! You can get a FM Transmitter for $17.26 there if you are looking for a quick fix but there is no gaurantee on the quality! I recommend the DLO Transdock micro 2.0 FM Transmitter that is specifically for iPod! I costes around $60 but is well worth the money. When it comes to enjoying your Ipod music in your car quality is a great priority!
