If your dog has a flea problem you'll need take care of your home and yard as well. Be sure , whatever product you choose to use on your dog, that it is rated for the age and size of your dog. More is not better, use the recommended dosage amount and frequency.

PetCo has this caution on their website: The EPA has reported an increase in complaints about adverse reactions to spot-on flea & tick products. The health and well-being of pets is our top priority, so please make sure to read and follow all label directions carefully and watch your pet when using any kind of medicine or supplement. We encourage pet parents to consult with their vet when using over the counter medicines.

They also have a diagnostic checklist so you can determine what level of treatment is necessary. Was it a few, moderate or severe infestation of fleas?

Flea shampoos
  • A shampoo, or "flea bath" i s a good first attack on fleas for the pet that has large numbers of fleas visible onits body.  Shampoos are only effective for a day or less. I've included a "safe" option for you below.
  • Spot-on treatments
Common brand names include: Advantage (tm), Frontline®, and Bio-Spot®just to name a few. Please consult with your veterinarian for the best choice for your pet(s). These products are applied between the shoulder blades of the pet, and typically last about one month. Some, like K-9 Advantix, also repel mosquitos!
Flea control for your house and yard
Only about 10% of the flea population (mainly the adults) are on yourpet. The flea eggs, larvae, pupa, and the few adults that reside in the carpeting, bedding, and living areas make up approximately 90% of the flea population.
  • Daily vacuuming - this is very important for overall flea eradication. This will pick up (and get rid of) adults, eggs, larvae and pupae before they develop.

  • Wash all bedding, clothing, and removable furniture covers.
  • Apply insecticide - this is tricky. You're putting down a poison. Use only if you have to and very, very carefully follow the directions . Use it as a last resort.
I've  listed some products for you that are all rated over 4 paws. Since every situation is unique and you want to ensure the health of your dog, please read the directions AND contact your vet with and questions!

Enjoy your dog! May she/he live long and be flea-free!
