Personally, I don't think one could go wrong with a wide legged dress pant. I'm a huge fan! Very classy and sophisticated. And with a solid white shirt, any color or print will do. And you can always keep a pair, as they don't go out of style. If want to keep the cost down, try the Michael Kors Wide Legged Cuff Pant on sale at $84.15:

Just about anything can look "ok" with a white shirt, but to look good, you need to think about your hair and skin color. If you have dark hair and dark skin, the bold contrast of black pants and the white shirt will look great. However, if you have lighter hair and skin, such contrast can be jarring to the eye. Try instead light brown or tan, or some other lighter color. The general principal is to match the contrast between your skin and hair with the contrasts in your clothing articles. To make an outfit with a white shirt more interesting, also think about patterned trousers. Anything will work with solid white. Pinstripes, herringbone, windowpane, chalk stripes... anything goes. If you add a tie or a jacket, though, it becomes a little more complicated as you will need to avoid a similar pattern unless you want to look like you are a train conductor! (not that there's anything wrong with that) Season can affect the choice as well, in terms of fabric weight. Heavy wool pants and darker colors feel and look better in fall and winter, while lighter weight fabrics go with spring and summer. However, with a "dress" shirt, do not wear cotton pants (like "dockers"). They are strictly casual, especially once they get worn a bit and start to fade and fray. Such a combination suggests laziness, sloppiness, and unsophistication.
