The iPhone can accurate locate your position and can give you good directions.  But it is not a navigation device and can not replace the GPS
The first generation iPhone and iPod touch use WiFi and cell tower triangulating to find your location which is much less accurate than GPS.  But the iPhone 3G does use satelite to locate the position and uses Google map to give good directions.  However, it does not speak turn by turn directions. Looking at the small screen on iPhone while driving is very dangerous.  Although it might be possible to add third party software to speak the turn by turn directions,  You would have to connect the iPhone to car stereo since the phone speaker is too low.

To be honest, no.  A lot of the older generations that are potential target markets for the Navigation systems are not, I believe, target markets for the iPhone 3G.  The iPhone is more for the tech-savvy generation and enthusiasts, while the navigation systems are more for one use-vaule: to not get lost.  I personally don't believe iPhone's are competitor products to navi systems, but just useful substitutes that happen to exist.  Also, think of the business class that mostly use Blackberry's.  Blackberry navis are simply horrible.    Also, if you've ever tried to navigate with a 3G, it's actually not that great.  Just the placement of a navigation system while driving is so much easier (and safer!).  Hope this makes sense.  Just my 2 cents!
