Only a CDMA network has been available in Korea for a long time. Recently they have opened up use of iPhones using the SK Telecom service. You will need to contact SK Telecom ot obtain service for that area if you are on military deployment. They should be able to help you get what you need for service.

Basically there are two issues to use iPhone in Korea.First thing is mobile platform issue. Korean government had been insisting all mobile device to install Korean standard platform called "WIPI". However this issues is solved. Around two month ago Korean government retreat this policy, which means all device can be served in Korea regardless of installation of WIPI.Second issues is related to "Testing and Certification". All mobile device, using in Korea, should get the "Korean organization for Testing and Certification". As far as I know, Apple didn't conduct this protocol yet. Apple is in the middle of negotiation to launch with top tier carriers like SK Telecom. After this negotiation, they will conduct the required process. Then you will be able to use iPhone in Korea hopefully.
