From the reviews that I have read so far about these two particular camera bodies, the Nikon D40x makes a very nice first dSLR, though experienced SLR shooters looking for a Nikon should spend the extra cash for the D80.  Definitely worth the investment if you plan to take alot of photographs.

The Nikon D80 (body only) is available from shopper.cnet.com for $649.95! One of the key advances developed for the D80 is its high-resolution image-processing engine.
