This is a really good question and had me thinking for a little while. Fruit is always a good idea. You could get these items from dietary. You can also put a "notice" in a employee newletter asking for gently used unwanted items that your residents would like to have. Many of the residents aren't mobile enough to go out to a store and purchase something for a family member for a birthday, so if there were something they could win and give, residents may like that idea.
Items such as candy bars, cookies, candies, things that the residents don't normally get to have much of. Dollar Stores have nice items like lotions, perfumes, things that residents may like to have.
