Firm mattresses have a layer of cushioning but are not as soft as other models. Though mattress firmness does not directly correlate to support, many people with back problems elect to sleep on a firm mattress, stating that the firmer padding prevents their back from sinking into an uncomfortable position.
I would suggest looking at the Simmons Beautyrest. The Beautyrest is popular for their individually wrap coils which reduce motion transfer.
