are the apple ipod headphones what picks up the radio for your ipod or can i buy a different kind of headphone?

No; it's the wifi that pics up the radio on your Ipod. The Ipod headphones (if you are talking about an ipod touch) comes with a mic. [The mic is the little rectangle attached to your headphones with the plus and minus shapes on it] If you don't use headphones with the mic you won't be able to use any application that needs you to speak or sing. But you can still use your ipod with no worries.
You can use 3rd party headphones
