Laptop computers are more difficult to use because they tend to be somewhat awkward and because they don’t easily support all of the peripherals that make desk top computers so much of a joy. Sure, you can hook a printer, a keyboard, and a mouse into a laptop, but doesn’t that make it pretty much the same thing as a des top computer?

The graphics and screen resolution on laptop computers don’t seem to be nearly as good as those of desk top computers. This could be because the video cards in laptop computers aren’t as large as those of desk top computers, and therefore not as good, or maybe it’s because of the way that the screens are made (the monitors of desk top computers are larger than the screens of laptop computers, too). Maybe size really does matter!

With all of that said, when comparing desk top computers to laptop computers, you have to give convenience and portability to the laptop computers. You can’t really take desk top computers with you in the car or on a plane and work while you are traveling, and you would look pretty odd setting up desk top computers in the internet café. But portability is really the only convenience that laptop computers have to offer over desk top computers.

So why is it, do you think, that laptop computers are still so much more expensive than desk top computers? You can pick up desk top computers for under $500 these days, and nice desk top computers, too. The only laptop computer you can get for that price is one that is in need of repair, or one that is so old that nobody wants it, and once they hit that age the batteries won’t stay charged anyway.

If you are trying to decide which type of computer to get, make sure that you weigh all of your options. How much will you really need to take your computer on the road with you? Is it worth an extra thousand dollars or so to have that capability? Or would you rather have the ease and usability that only desk top computers can offer, and for a great price, too?

You can take professional looking photos with a 4 or 5 megapixel camera, and the photos store easily on your hard drive. The more megapixels you have, the larger the file is for each photo because, well, there are more pixels in them. Unless you will be taking photos for advertising billboards, you probably don’t need more than 6 megapixels, and 4 or 5 are just fine for amateur photography.

The point is, no matter what the camera professionals try to convince you into buying, get what you can afford. A good digital camera that takes outstanding photographs no longer has to cost you an arm and a leg.

Most all GPS units, whether a portable or an in car GPS unit, have a mapping program pre-installed. A portable unit, however, will need additional programs installed if you want the convenience of turn by turn directions, and few of them will actually speak your directions for you as you drive. It is difficult to watch a map on a tiny screen while you drive. With the in car GPS unit you don’t have to look at the screen at all unless you want to view the map because it will tell you when you have an upcoming turn.

Another advantage of the in car GPS unit is that you have the option to subscribe to a live person to be available to help you out when you have an accident, get lost, or are in need otherwise. The live person will talk with you by hands free speaker through the in car GPS unit by a two way conversation to make sure that you get the service that you need from them. This option is not available with a portable unit, not even the kind that you can plug into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter.

An in car GPS unit can be pricey, however. You can expect to pay up to $3,000 for the best in car GPS units, or you can pick up one without all of the options for well under $1,000. The in car GPS unit that you choose will most likely depend on how often you plan to use it. If you do a lot of traveling by car then you may want to choose one with more options and features on it such as the ability to plug your Bluetooth headset into or with the ability to download more programs onto it as you need them.
